Kiteboarding, kitesurfing, or whatever you want to call it, is a fast growing extreme sport that combines aspects of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, paragliding, and more. Over the years, the sport has developed and evolved from attaching kites to canoes, skis, and iceskates in the 1980s, to strapping kite foils to windsurfing boards in 1990s. Soon after, specialized kites and boards were developed and the sport of Kiteboarding was born! In the sport’s short history, incredible advancements in technology have been made and each year better, lighter, more durable, and more reliable kiteboards, kites, and other kiteboarding gear have been made.
Tronolone mixes the perfect compliment of lifestyle and action footage in this World Tour highlight video:
• Witness all the covert opps from the 2004 PKRA World Domination Tour.
• Watch Aaron Hadlow lead the youth movement and dominate all enemy forces in his line of fire.
• See Cindy Mosey three-peat, taking home her third consecutive championship title.
•Realize that the most progressive freestyle kiteboarding on Earth is happening at PKRA (Professional Kite Riders Association) event locations featured in this DVD; Austria, Belgium, Cabarete, Germany, Fuerte Ventura, and Brazil.
*Note: contrary to what the title might suggest this is not an entry-level video. It starts off at the early jumping stage.
Tronolone Production's (Unhooked, Awake) does a great job at filling an instructional void at the intermediate level. Both the VHS and DVD have the unique and innovative options of being able to view either a full-screen version with the kite tricks front and center during the voiceover, or a split screen view with the host's instruction on the left, the action being completed on the right, and text below describing the scene. Definitely a maximum absorption value.
What really makes this video is the professional and technical insight from host Shannon Best. His extensive background in wakeboarding, and understanding of the mechanics of kiteboarding allows him to share some tips that you'll find nowhere else. He pays particular attention to hand and body positions that will definitley help you with all aspects of kiteboarding, and other sports as well.
The video is divided into three sections:
- Body Position - Heel-side - Unhooked - Toe-side - Switch - Kite Postion
- Load and Pop - 180s - Jumping -Â Jumping without the Kite
- Back Rolls - Toe-side Bakc Rolls - Rolls to Revert - Heel-side - Jibe and Air Jibe
This is Tronolone Production's sequel to Kiteboarding 101, their popular instructional video expertly hosted by Shannon Best. 201, as you might expect, takes off where 101 left off. It'll start with front spins and all the variations and progress from there. The DVD will have the same bonus viewing features including five different languages. And of course, Shannon Best will break things down for you like only he can do.
The team at Tronolone Productions has done it again. Not content with ushering in the newest era of performance in kiteboarding with the release of Space Monkeys, they now present part 2. While filming Space Monkeys 2 with Jeff Tobias, Will James, Martin Vari and Jaime Herriaz the Tronolone Productions team captured the best wave footage ever filmed! Edgy soundtracks and super tight editing has become Tronolone's trademark and has established them as the most popular kiteboarding video producers. Space Monkeys 2 will only further that reputation.
From all the way back in the mid-90s, prime windsurfing days, some of the best videos were from Trow Vision Productions - films like Chapped and Surface Tension. Then Peter Trow took to kiting like a storm, becoming a pro rider and co-producing Strung Out with us, another winner. We're pleased to announce another great video - Soul Fly.
Join 2004 PKRA world champion Aaron Hadlow, female wave ripper Ammy Naff, pro surfer turned pro kiter Josh Mulcoy, filmmaker Peter Trow (of course), and others on a wave rich journey to the enchanted waters of the Caribbean, deep into dusty Baja, Mexio, and all along California's diverse coastline. Filmed in colorful 16mm film and professional digital video, Soul Fly captures the essence of wave kiting as well as a look into the progression of freestyle riding. Experience this intriguing ride into the wind, the waves, travel, and soul.
And if you know anything about Peter, you'll guess that there's a serious dose of hardcore waveriding action, epic down-the line perfection, and heavy Santa Cruz power. Peter is also a stickler for clean, well-composed cinematography, and searches untiringly for the perfect soundtrack to create a masterfully edited film that appeals to everyone, one reason why Peter doesn't pop films out every six months.
Reflecting Peter's surfing roots, Soul Fly is created with an old-time surf movie vein, but with the modern technical wizardry of kiteboarding today. Kiteboarding's current directional, wave oriented, style owes 100% hommage to Peter, who, by staying true to his roots, never relinquished his directional for either twin tip or wake style riding in his 6 years of kiteboarding. Combine that with the sport's youngest world champ, who can do anything on a kite, and Josh Mulcoy, the most stylish and pure surfing style kiteboarder today, and you've got a video that will headline your collection. A video with soul.
From the creators of TEN4 and Metropolis comes ACL Productions latest installment in progressive kiteboarding videos. This highly anticipated release, AutoFocus, documents what happens when you combine wind, raw talent and the most exclusive kiteboarding destinations in the world. AutoFocus brings together seven of the most talented, style driven and highly respected wakestyle riders in the industry and drops them into the largest most elaborate conglomeration of sliders, kickers and rails to date.
The ACL crew documented and captured epic images of these riders pushing themselves to new levels, and ultimately, progressing the sport of kiteboarding to a legitimizing new level. AutoFocus was shot on location in Antigua, Dominican Republic, Coche Island Venezuela and features the riding of Andre Phillip, Mauricio Abreu, Bertrand Fleury, Moe Goold, Jason Slezak, Jason Stone, and Stav Niarchos.
Also featured is tons of bonus footage including the making of AutoFocus, how to build sliders, rider interviews, out-takes, still photos, behind the scenes with the riders, insane wipeouts and much more! Enjoy the progression.
The dvd's title is a reference to those m a g i c days when you score the perfect combination of wind and waves.
The who's who of wave riding deliver stellar performances including, Josh Mulcoy, Maurcio Abreu, Moehau Goold, Reo Stevens, John Amundson, Bertrand Fleury, Ryland Blakeny, Marc Ramsier and of course Ben Wilson himself. Supported by a cast of the usual suspects including Grant Baker, Jake Gordon and Martin Vari just to name a few.
Coming together showcases a plethora of wave riding locations including Micronesia, Indonesia, Chile, California, Hawaii, South Africa and Australia. This awesome collection of footage and exceptional level of riding will have you frothing for some overseas travel and on the phone to the local travel agent before the film even finishes.
Coming Together features both strapped and unstrapped riding - not something we have really seen in Ben's previous productions. Showcasing all aspects of the waveriding side of kiteboarding, not just the unhooked and unstrapped approach. Illustrating that there are many possibilities for getting out into the waves with a surfboard and a kite. Wilson has always said that he respects all forms of riding be it strapped or unstrapped and here's the proof.
By Mike Waltze: The sport of Stand Up Paddle seems to have popped up out of nowhere. The truth is, the sport has deep roots in both early Polynesian and Hawaiian History as it is truly a combination of outrigger paddling and surfing.
The first regular Stand Up Paddle enthusiasts were playing around in Waikiki as early as 1939, when Duke Kahnomoku used to stand up on an australian surf ski. Later, in the 60's and 70's guys like John Ah Choy and John Zapotocki used to do the sport regularly up into the late 90's until they finally were getting to old to keep surfing.
Around that Same time, Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama played around with paddles on Maui and although at first no one seemed to take notice, it wasn't long before the sport was attracting all sorts of users from all over the world.
Now, Stand Up Paddling is done almost everwhere there is water, and the sport has gone in multiple directions. Some people like the excercise and weight loss aspects in flat water, others like to race, and the most extreme are taking the boards out into the waves. Filmed in Hawaii, Fiji, and Tahiti, That First Glide is a must see movie for everyone and features most of the premier athletes that got the sport off the ground.
From Fatsand Productions in the UK, makers of the incredibly popular Progression Series instructional DVDs. Low on lifestyle and high on action, the kiteboarding press has widely touted AC as the best action kiteboarding video of the year (2004/5). Aaron Hadlow, Mark Doyle, and Mark Shinn rip up South Africa, Europe, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean. Great footage, editing, and music, plus tons of bonus features. If you're even remotely interested in how hard Aaron Hadlow rips, then get this one.
This is the fifth and final DVD in Real's instructional series, and this one is a bit different. Instead of a full-blown instructional you get the best of both worlds. On side one, if you will, you get all the crazy action that went down during this year's Real Kiteboarding Triple 'S' invitational contest. And I use the word 'contest' loosely. Instead it's more like a week-long excuse to cut loose and take kiteboarding to the next level. SSS stands for Surf, Slicks, and Sliders, with the event taking advantage of a flexible format, riding the sliders, or flat water moves in the slick, or surf sessions (with or without a kite), and even skateboarding as conditions warranted. The motto of the event became, "The world is not ready.", as the riding was off the scale. Some of this year's invitees included Andy Hurdman, Jason Slezak, Andre Phillip, Davey Blair, Greg Norman, Suzi Mai, Moehao Goold, Shannon Best, Sam Bell, Thomas Kogut, Jon Modica, Dimitri Maramenides, Aimee Rabee, and Evan Netsch. Convinced yet?
Well, if you're not, let's talk about the back-side of the DVD. It is an instructional series, after all, and all the riders give their tips on handling a multitude of high-end kiteboarding maneuvers. Subjects include, getting better pop for powered flat-water moves, tips for unhooked riding, handlepasses, kite loops, board-offs, riding blind, and hitting sliders. And after all that there's an nice bonus section of the unbelieveable surf kiting that went down during hurricane Florence in late summer in Cape Hatteras. Quite an exclamation point to the end of the 5 DVD series.
There are different styles of kiteboarding, from freeride or freestyle, wave-riding, and even course and speed racing. The freeride kiteboarding style is pretty much the “anything goes” approach and is the most popular. Most kiteboards sold today are freeride boards with twin tips. The freestyle style of riding is focused on getting big air and doing airborne tricks. Smaller boards and kites with good hang times are used. The wave-riding kiteboarding style is closest to surfing since it is done in a location with a wave break, which is why the sport is often referred to as kitesurfing. This style most often uses a single-point directional board, sometimes without footstraps, and some even use a standard surfboard. The wakestyle style of kiteboarding is most similar to wakeboarding and is focused on tricks and aerials and uses boards with bindings to keep riders strapped in. There are also course racing and speed racing kiteboarding styles which involve speed, skill, and strategy. Specially designed directional race boards with longer fins are used with the goal of outperforming the other kiters to come in first place.
